around at the front still,’ said Dover. ‘No point in letting him see us. I’ll bet he’s been reporting every blooming move we’ve made back to old Wibbley.’ He laughed without humour. ‘I wish I could see that so-and-so’s face when he finds out. He’ll have a fit.’
‘Finds out what, sir?’
‘That his precious son-in-law’ll have ’em in tears when his case comes up for trial. There’ll be so much flaming sympathy for him it wouldn’t surprise me if the jury didn’t bring him in not guilty.’
‘But, I don’t understand, sir.’ MacGregor was thoroughly bewildered. Much to Dover’s satisfaction.
‘You will, laddie, you will!’
Before MacGregor had time to press his inquiries any further there was an imperious miaow. The large black hospital cat came speeding towards them, tail erect and demanding to have the door opened for him.
During his time at the hospital he had grown fat and sluggish. He’d grown accustomed to receiving only affection and kindness from the human beings with whom he came in contact. His reactions weren’t as sharp as they should have been
‘Bloody animal!’ snarled Dover and swung a nifty foot.
The cat saw it coming and ran.
He didn’t quite make it.
